esllville ( Getting To Know You)

ESL classes at Fresno Adult School are set to open on Monday, August 15th.  The first day of class is always filled with excitement.  The teacher and students come together for the first time. For ESL students the first unit is one about Getting To Know You or Meeting New People.

For the beginning students it's a time to learn personal information such as name, address, and phone number.  For the more advanced students, it's a time to talk about favorites (books, music, hobbies). Five minute round robins throughout the class or question/answer exercises are a good way to practice personal information.  There is always someone who might ask you "What is your name?" or "Who is your favorite musical group?"

My favorite writing activity for beginning students are name cards with all of the necessary information both the student and the teacher needs. These name cards are on the student's desk at all times.  It saves running over to the teacher's computer and looking up a student ID number. Think about it, when was the last time you were asked "What is your ID number?"

ESLVILLE (Combining Qualitative and Quantitative Research for Adult ESL1)

There is a question in the ESL community that is asked over and over and over again.  "What is the role in ESL class of the home language?"

I am taking an online ESL professional development class that tackles this very weighty question. As a kindergarten teacher I used the preview/review strategy in my bilingual class. If the preview was in Spanish, the review was in English.  If the preview was in English, the review was in Spanish.

However, when I began as an ESL adult education teacher, the controversy as to how adult ESL students learn best was an issue.  At that time immersion in English was encouraged.  However recently research as been done that says it may be a good idea to use the home language in the ESL classroom.

The research has given me lots to think about.  What do think about the use of the home language in adult ESL classroom?
